Batemans Bay Weather In Summer: What To Expect In Malua Bay
Batemans Bay weather from November to January is warm rather than hot. The Bureau of Meteorology's Batemans Bay station averages a top of 23.0°C in November, 24.4°C in December and 25.9°C in January, with about eight or nine days of rain a month. Hot days come in short bursts, afternoons are breezier than mornings, the UV is strong and bushfire rules apply. This guide turns the Bureau's long-term figures into a practical summer plan for Malua Bay, two minutes' walk from the sand at Skyes Beach House.

Quick Answers
1How warm is Batemans Bay in December? The Bureau's Batemans Bay station averages a 24.4°C maximum and a 14.1°C minimum in December.
2Does it rain much in summer? The station averages 8.4 to 8.9 days with at least 1 mm of rain in each of November, December and January.
3Is it hot? Days of 30°C or more average 3.0 in December and 4.5 in January, so most summer days are in the low to mid 20s.
Batemans Bay Weather In Summer: The Short Answer
Will a summer week in Malua Bay be beach weather? Mostly yes, with a few cooler, wetter or windier days mixed in. The Bureau of Meteorology's long-term figures for Batemans Bay show average maximum temperatures climbing from 21.8°C in October to 23.0°C in November, 24.4°C in December and a peak of 25.9°C in January. February is almost as warm at 25.6°C.
Average minimums are 12.3°C in November, 14.1°C in December and 15.7°C in January, so a light jumper is still handy for early evenings on the deck, especially in November.
Rain is spread through the season rather than packed into one wet month. The station averages 91.4 mm in November, 72.7 mm in December and 85.5 mm in January, falling on about eight or nine days each month. That usually means passing showers, the odd storm and occasional grey days, not a washed-out week.
What catches visitors out is not the averages but the short hot spells, the sun, the afternoon wind and the bushfire rules. This guide covers each one.
Remember: these are long-term averages, not a forecast. Any given week can be warmer, cooler or wetter. For your actual trip, check the Bureau's Batemans Bay forecast in the days before you travel and each morning while you are here.
Where These Batemans Bay Weather Figures Come From
Every climate figure in this guide comes from the Bureau of Meteorology's climate statistics, as published on 22 October 2026 and read on 28 October 2026. Two stations matter for Malua Bay.
Batemans Bay (Catalina Country Club)
Station 069134, 11 metres above sea level, open since 1991. It sits in Catalina, Batemans Bay, about 9 km in a straight line from the Malua Bay surf club. This is our main source for temperature, rain, cloud and humidity.
Moruya Airport AWS
Station 069148, open since 1999, about 14 km in a straight line south-west of Malua Bay. It records much stronger average winds than the Catalina station, so we use it for the wind figures and gusts.
Malua Bay (in between)
Malua Bay faces the open ocean between the two. Our reading is that summer temperatures here sit close to the Batemans Bay station, with the breeze closer to what Moruya Airport records.
One detail: the average maximum and minimum temperatures at the Batemans Bay station cover 1991 to 2021, while hot-day counts, records and rainfall run to 2026. The 9am and 3pm cloud, humidity and wind averages come from older periods (1991 to 2010 at Batemans Bay, 1999 to 2010 at Moruya Airport).

In plain terms: November feels like late spring, December brings properly warm beach days, and January is the warmest month with the most hot days. December is the driest of the five months on average, and February the wettest.
The middle of the range is also useful. In December, one day in ten tops 30.2°C or more, and one day in ten stays at 20.0°C or below. In January the same figures are 31.8°C and 21.5°C. Most days fall comfortably in between.
Malua Bay Weather In November: Late Spring Warming Up
November is a good month for a beach stay before the school holidays begin. The Batemans Bay station averages 23.0°C by day and 12.3°C overnight, so mornings can feel fresh and evenings cool down quickly once the sun drops.
It is the cloudiest month of the year in the Bureau's table (about 10.3 cloudy days and 4.8 clear days), with 91.4 mm of rain on average. Expect a mix of bright and grey days.
The beach is already in use. Eurobodalla Shire Council lists Malua Bay as patrolled on weekends and public holidays from October to April, and says volunteers from local surf lifesaving clubs run these patrols. Outside the peak summer season the council lists no weekday patrols, so midweek in November swim with care and stay close to shore.
November tip: pack layers. With average lows of 12.3°C and highs of 23.0°C, a cool morning can turn into a warm middle of the day, then cool again in the evening breeze. The heated upstairs decks and the bioethanol fireplace on the downstairs front deck at Skyes Beach House come into their own on these evenings.
For surf conditions this time of year, see our Malua Bay surfing guide, which covers the main breaks and lessons nearby.
Batemans Bay Weather In December: Warm Days And The Christmas Rush
December is when Malua Bay starts to feel like summer. The Batemans Bay station averages 24.4°C by day and 14.1°C at night, with 72.7 mm of rain over about 8.6 rainy days. It has the lowest average rainfall of the five months in the table above, and the highest average solar exposure of the year.
Hot days are still occasional. On average, 3.0 December days reach 30°C and 1.0 reaches 35°C. The station's December record is 42.1°C, set on 17 December 2009, a reminder that very hot days are possible even on a mild coast.
From mid December the beach gets busier: the NSW Government lists the summer school holidays for the Eastern division as Friday 18 December 2026 to Wednesday 27 January 2027. Eurobodalla Shire Council says professional lifeguards patrol eight popular beaches seven days a week in the peak summer holiday season, and Malua Bay is on the list. The council page still showed last season's dates (19 December 2024 to 31 January 2025), so confirm the 2026–27 dates before you rely on a patrol.
Over Christmas, expect busier beaches and car parks. Our Malua Bay beach guide has more on the beach itself and the village nearby.
Batemans Bay Weather In January: The Warmest Month
January is the peak of the season. The Batemans Bay station averages 25.9°C by day and 15.7°C overnight, the warmest figures of the year. It also has the most hot days, with an average of 4.5 days at 30°C or more and 1.0 day at 35°C or more.
The station's all-time highest temperature is a January reading: 45.6°C on 18 January 2013. That is far from typical, but it shows why a hot-day plan matters. In a normal January the 3pm temperature averages 24.2°C, and the 3pm humidity averages 63%, so most afternoons are warm rather than sticky.
Rain averages 85.5 mm over about 8.4 days, and only about 2.2 days in an average January bring 10 mm or more.
January is also when the beach is at its busiest, with school holidays running until Wednesday 27 January 2027 in the Eastern division.
Hot Days And Heatwaves Near Malua Bay
Most summer days are mild, but heat does arrive. Across a typical year the Batemans Bay station records about 17.3 days of 30°C or more and 3.8 days of 35°C or more.
Our practical advice when the forecast shows 30°C or more:
1Go early: swim, walk or surf before about 10am, while it is cooler and before the strongest sun.
2Use the air-conditioning in the middle of the day: Skyes Beach House has ducted air-conditioning and ceiling fans upstairs, and split-system air-conditioning and portable fans downstairs.
3Check the fire danger rating: a total fire ban may be declared when conditions are dangerous, and that changes what you can cook outside.
Rain, Storms And Grey Days In Summer
Batemans Bay is not a wet place in summer, but it is not dry either. The station averages 919.0 mm a year, and between November and January it records about eight or nine days a month with at least 1 mm of rain. Only 2.2 to 2.7 days a month bring 10 mm or more.
Cloud is common: about 8.9 to 10.3 cloudy days a month from November to January, against 4.5 to 6.1 clear days.
On stormy days, check the Bureau's warnings before heading out and get out of the water if you hear thunder.
Swimming after rain: the NSW Government's Beachwatch program advises staying out of the water when it is raining and for up to three days afterwards, because stormwater can carry pollution. Check Beachwatch for Malua Bay Beach before swimming after heavy rain.
A wet day is a good excuse to stay in. Our Batemans Bay rainy-day guide lists indoor options around Malua Bay, and the games room, two living areas and the infrared sauna at the house make a grey afternoon easy.
Wind At Malua Bay: Calm Mornings, Breezier Afternoons
Wind matters a lot for a beach day, and the Bureau's figures show a clear daily pattern. At Moruya Airport, the windier of the two stations, the average wind speed in December is 12.6 km/h at 9am and 21.6 km/h at 3pm. November and January follow the same shape (12.8 rising to 22.1 km/h, and 11.8 rising to 22.8 km/h).
The Batemans Bay station shows lower numbers (3.9 km/h at 9am and 12.5 km/h at 3pm in December) but the same rise through the day. The highest gusts recorded at Moruya Airport since 2010 reached 94 km/h in both October and January, so strong-wind days do happen.
Mornings
Usually the calmest part of the day. Best for swimming, snorkelling, paddling and glassy surf.
Afternoons
Typically breezier. Good for walks, a shaded deck, the spa and the games room, less good for small boats and paddleboards.
Before boating
Check the Bureau's Batemans Coastal Waters Forecast (Ulladulla to Montague Island) for wind and wave warnings.
December has the highest average solar exposure at the Batemans Bay station (21.9 MJ/m² a day), with January close behind, so a mild day can still bring strong sun.
Cancer Council NSW says sun protection is needed whenever the UV is 3 or above. These are called the sun protection times, and you can check them each day on the free SunSmart app or the Bureau of Meteorology website.
1Slip on a shirt or other sun-protective clothing.
2Slop on sunscreen.
3Slap on a hat, ideally broad-brimmed.
4Seek shade, especially in the middle of the day.
5Slide on sunglasses.
Cloudy days count too, so plan beach time for the morning and late afternoon.

The council page also says Malua Bay is one of seven beaches with a mobility mat for the summer school holidays, placed on the sand during patrol hours, and a beach wheelchair is available through the surf club. Contact Batemans Bay SLSC on 02 4471 1315 ahead of time.
Swim between the red and yellow flags, ask the lifesavers about conditions, and if you are unsure, stay out. The Surf Life Saving Beachsafe website and app shows patrol status and hazards for each beach.
Outside patrol times: before the peak season starts, the council lists Malua Bay patrols on weekends and public holidays only, so expect no patrol midweek in November and early December. Swim only in calm conditions, stay in your depth, and supervise children closely at the water's edge.

Bushfire Season: Fire Danger Ratings And Total Fire Bans
Summer is bushfire season on the South Coast, and the rules apply to holidaymakers as much as locals. The NSW Rural Fire Service sets fire danger ratings and total fire bans each afternoon for the next day. Eurobodalla shares a fire weather area with Bega Valley.

What a total fire ban means at the house
On a total fire ban day, the RFS says you cannot light, maintain or use a fire in the open. A barbecue or wood-fire pizza oven that uses solid fuel cannot be used outside. That rules out the outdoor wood firepit at Skyes Beach House on those days. The pellet smoker burns wood pellets, also a solid fuel, so leave it off on ban days too.
The RFS allows a gas barbecue during a ban only when all of these apply: a responsible adult is present and in control at all times, nothing combustible is within two metres, there is an immediate and continuous supply of water, and the barbecue is within 20 metres of a permanent home. Electric barbecues are allowed with an adult present and nothing combustible within two metres.
Check every day: fire bans can be declared at short notice. Check the RFS fire danger ratings each afternoon for the next day, and if in doubt about any outdoor cooking, leave it for another night and use the indoor kitchens.
A Plan For Every Batemans Bay Forecast
Look at the forecast each evening, then pick the plan that fits.
Perfect beach day (low to mid 20s, light morning wind)
Walk to Malua Bay Beach early, swim between the flags, and come back for a late breakfast. Take a picnic to the beach or a nearby cove at lunch, then rinse off under the outdoor beach shower and finish with a backyard barbecue if there is no fire ban.
Hot day (30°C or more)
Swim before 10am, then retreat to the air-conditioned house through the middle of the day. Bay Pavilions at 12 Vesper Street, Batemans Bay, roughly 15 to 20 minutes' drive, has an indoor 25-metre pool, a leisure pool with a learn-to-swim area and a toddler play area, and the four Garungadj Water Slides. Riders must be 6 or older, over 120 cm tall and under 120 kg. Its opening-hours page lists the 25-metre and warm water pools from 6am to 6:45pm on weekdays and 7am to 4:45pm on weekends, and the leisure pool from 9am. The slides open 10am to 5pm every day in the summer school holidays, but during school terms only on weekends and public holidays (11am to 5pm), so in November and early December save the slides for a Saturday or Sunday. Return to the beach late in the afternoon when the sun eases.
Windy afternoon
Do the water things in the morning. When the breeze builds, switch to a long lunch, the hydrotherapy spas or the arcade. On a mild day, the Eurobodalla Regional Botanic Garden, five kilometres south of Batemans Bay, is free and open Wednesday to Sunday, 9am to 4pm, and every day in NSW school and public holidays except Good Friday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Dogs and bikes are not permitted there (assistance dogs are allowed).
Wet or stormy day
Stay in. Run a Daytona racing tournament, a pinball session or a board game marathon, book a turn in the infrared sauna, and cook something slow in one of the two kitchens. Skip the ocean for up to three days after heavy rain, as Beachwatch advises.

Why Skyes Beach House Works In Any Summer Weather
Summer here is easiest when the house can handle every kind of day. Skyes Beach House sleeps up to 20 guests across six bedrooms, and Malua Bay Beach is about a 2-minute walk away, so an early swim before the wind picks up is simple.
On hot days, the house has ducted air-conditioning and ceiling fans upstairs and split-system air-conditioning and portable fans downstairs, with an outdoor beach shower for rinsing off sand. On cool November evenings, the upstairs front and back decks have infrared heating and the downstairs front deck has a bioethanol fireplace.

Two kitchens, two outdoor dining tables seating 16 people each, a flat grill barbecue, a gas pizza oven and a pellet smoker make it easy to feed a group at home (check the fire danger rating before any outdoor cooking). Pets are welcome by approval, and the home suits up to two dogs with a private fenced yard. You can see current dates on the Skyes Beach House listing.

How A Big Group Uses The House Through A Summer Week
The two-level layout is the key for a summer group. Bedrooms 1 to 4 are upstairs, including the main king bedroom, a queen bedroom, a room with two double beds and a tri-bunk room. Bedrooms 5 and 6 are downstairs, with a second king bedroom and a bunk room. External stairs connect the two levels, so two families or a few households can each have their own space.
Each level has its own living area and kitchen, and both kitchens have an automatic coffee machine for early beach mornings. Two highchairs are supplied, and portacots, change tables, a baby gate and child-proofing items are available on request.
The private fenced yard, with lawn, a trampoline and a swing set, gives younger children their own outdoor space, and Wi-Fi measured at 657 Mbps keeps streaming going on a rainy day.
What To Pack For A Malua Bay Summer
For the beach
Swimwear, rashies for children, sunscreen, broad-brimmed hats and sunglasses. A beach towel per guest is included at the house, along with beach essentials.
For the evenings
A light jumper or jacket, especially in November, when average overnight lows are 12.3°C. Long pants help on breezy decks.
For changeable days
A light rain jacket, closed shoes for headland walks, and a small first-aid kit. Download the Bureau, SunSmart and Hazards Near Me apps before you arrive.
You do not need to pack linen, bath towels, shampoo, conditioner, body wash or basic pantry items: the listing says these are supplied. If you are bringing a dog, pack its lead, bed and water bowl, and confirm pet approval before arrival.
